Prior to 1901, Australia consisted of six independent British colonies. copyright usage was not widespread, and if expected British or other countrywide passports ended up used. From the nineteenth century, paroled convicts were issued a form of inner copyright named "ticket of go away", which enabled them to maneuver freely between the colonies.[t
